TURKS AT TIFF

First annual Toronto showcase of Turkish cinema and culture

Sept. 11-16, 2015

Last year in October, Montreal hosted the first annual Festival Corne d’Or (Golden Horn Festival), a Turkish film festival celebrating the country’s vibrant cinema culture. It was such an overwhelming success, that this year we’ve been invited to bring Turkey to Toronto during the city’s prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.

In addition to bringing a delegation of cinema professionals to the festival’s unofficial film market, Turks at TIFF will showcase a diverse lineup of movies at Toronto’s Rainbow Cinema Market Square, Q&As with some of the country’s top actors, directors, and producers, and a concert featuring legendary Turkish psychedelic rock band BaBa ZuLa with Toronto folk singer Brenna MacCrimmon, and so much more.

Amongst others, this year’s screenings will feature Mehmet Eryılmaz’s stark and enigmatic family drama, THE VISITOR (Misafir), Ilksen Basarir’s chemistry-filled indie romance, ONCE UPON A TIME, Ali Atay’s directorial debut – the road-comedy, LEMONADE (Limonata), and Red Bull Turkey’s ANADOLU BREAK, a film that documents the melding of dance cultures between East and West.

Turks at TIFF will also proudly act as a facilitator of acclaimed Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Master Class at TIFF (on September 17), as well as an interactive appearance at our Turkish film showcase. Other special guests will include Melisa Sözen, Cengiz Bozkurt, Murat Yıldırım, and Ali Sürmeli.

About Turks at TIFF

Turks at TIFF is an initiative whose goal it is to increase visibility and legibility of the Turkish film industry on an international scale. Funded in large part by the Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism, the program was conceived thanks to their insight, advice, and constant support.

Over the past decade, filmmaking in Turkey has experienced a veritable renaissance and an ensuing process of self-realization and unification. Now is a crucial time for Turkish cinema to properly make its foray into the western milieu. The latest touchstone was set in 2014, its centenary year, in which Turkey’s most recognizable and successful director, Nuri Bilge Ceylan won the Cannes Palme d’Or for his film, WINTER SLEEP.

TIFF’s inclusive format and its increasingly impactful reach have classed it amongst the best international film festivals, consistently offering cutting-edge, films each year. Since the late 1990s, it has been the event from which the most eminent Oscar “buzz” could be drawn. And for the past ten years, it has been placed second to Cannes.

Turks at TIFF therefore represents the Turkish filmmaking community’s official foray into the Canadian market, and it couldn’t come at a better time. This year in particular has represented an exceptional upswing for Turkish film in terms of visibility and diversification, which has been clearly reflected by TIFF’s 2015 Official Selection. Listed below are the playtimes for the six Turkish films – four features and two shorts, to be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival.
